- how to use menus. Most Amiga programs use menus the same way.
-
- You have also learned that HomeBuilders Cad is a point to draw program
- which allows you to point to where you want things to be drawn.
-
- You have learned how to draw rectangular items (4 walls, concrete pads,
- etc.).
-
- You have learned how windows and doors are added to walls (You point
- to the upper or left most point of the door or window, then point to
- which side it opens out to and,if it has hinges, which side the hinges
- are on).
-
- You have also learned how to change elevations within a drawing and the
- impact of the Show Level commands. Remember when your drawing
- disappeared?
-
- AFTER USING ANY GADGET IN THE VIEW WINDOW, ALWAYS MOVE OVER SOME

- menu will restore your drawing. Refer to sections 3 and 4 for more
- detailed explanations of the other functions of HomeBuilders Cad. Have
- fun!
- SECTION 3: HOW IT WORKS FUNCTION SUMMARY
-
- HomeBuilders Cad is a design and estimating tool for wood frame, brick
- and other facing construction. Its main benefit comes from its ability
- to estimate cost for designs at a level of detail greater than cost per
- square foot without having to develop detailed working drawings.
- HomeBuilders Cad also helps to speed up estimating design changes,
- again without redoing working drawings or materials schedules. Its
- other strength is that it draws things (walls, doors, foundations,
- etc.) which are specific to frame construction so the person using it
- doesn't need drafting skills in order to make best use of it. The way
- it works is simple. You draw the floor plan. It draws the front,
- rear, left and right view and figures out the cost.
-
- HomeBuilders Cad has a main menu which is divided into nine basic menu
- functions. Within the nine basic menu functions you can choose from
- among 84 options to design your building project. The nine basic menu
- functions appear as a menu strip across the top of your monitor screen.
-
- Press the right mouse button when HomeBuilders Cad first starts up to
- see the menu strip.
-
- The typical sequence of events for developing and estimating a design
- would be:
-
- Use the Survey option of the Landscape menu to indicate hills, valleys
- and other relevent topography.
-
- Use one of the Foundation menu options (foundation walls & footer,
- slabs, etc.) to create a structure's foundation.
-
- Use the Up a level and Dn a level GADGETS on the View window to move up
- or down in the design (like 53from the basement to the first floor).
-
- Create walls, floors and roofs using one of the Frame menu options.
-
- Create kitchen and bathroom details using options from the Draw menu.
-
- Add windows, doors and doorways using options from the Draw menu.
-
- Copy Move, Delete or Rotate items using the options from the Alter
- menu.
-
- Use the View/Scale menu to take a closer look at your work or to get a
- larger view.
-
- Use the FRONT, BACK, LEFT or RIGHT gadgets on the View window to see
- different sides of your drawing. Look at these views by moving the
- mouse pointer down to the white strip at the bottom of the screen that
- is labeled PULL ME UP TO SEE. Press the left mouse button and, while
- keeping it depressed, move the mouse pointer up. The view that you
- requested will be brought up on the PULL ME UP TO SEE screen.
-
- Add Text and dimensions using options in the Utilities menu.
-
- Use Draw menu options to add electrical and plumbing details.
-
- Use Utilities menu options to control what items you see on your
- drawing. You m5ay also add dimensions and text.
-
- Use one of the Estimate options to print or show costs for the entire
- design, a single item (wall, cabinet, etc.), or an area of the design.
-
- Use the Save option of the Project menu to save your design for future
- use.
-
- Use the Quit option of the Project menu to end your design session.
-
- Following is a list of the options contained within each menu along
- with a brief description of each option. You will find a detailed
- explanation of how each option works in section 4.
-
- Project Menu Options
- ====================

- drawing, be sure to use the SAVE option first
-
- OPEN - allows you to retrieve a previously saved drawing
-
- PRINT - prints whatever is on the current drafting window or PULL ME UP
- TO SEE screen
-
- SAVE - Save the current drawing in a file, after you name it
-
- DELETE - deletes any file you have previously saved (by name)
-
- QUIT - stops the program. Be careful to save the current drawing
- before using this option, or you will lose it
-
- COPYRIGHT - shows copyright information for HomeBuilders Cad.
-
- Utilities Menu Options
- ======================
- EDIT PART COSTS - starts the part cost editor named Editparts. It will
- appear on the WorkBench screen. This option can also be run directly
- from the WorkBench Screen using the Editparts Icon.
-
- SET CEILING HEIGHT - changes the height of the walls to be drawn using
- options from the Frame and Foundation menus. The default setting is 97
- inches and uses standard 2.4.93 inch studs.
-
- SET PAN Z INCREMENT - changes the elevation increment used by the Up a
- level and Down a level gadgets on the View window. The default setting
- is 110 inches.
-
- SET CURRENT HEIGHT - changes the current working height. The current
- working height is the elevation being used to draw from. Example:
- Imagine that you are standing on the first floor. That is height 0.
- If you wanted to draw a landing three steps (24 inches) up from w
- here you are, you would set the current height to 24. This is covered
- in greater detail in section 4.
-
- ADD TEXT - allows you to create and add text to your drawing.
-
- SET ROOF PITCH - allows you to change the roof pitch (rise to run
- ratio). The default if 5" rise to 12" run.
-
- DRAW/FREEFORM LINE - allows you to better illustrate your drawing by
- adding details such as leader and extension lines as well as adding
- simple free form drawing lines. These lines are ignored by the cost
- calculation portion of the program and do not show up on the front,
- back or side views.
-
- ADD DIMENSIONS - Automatically calculates the distance between two
- points which you designate. It also allows you to place the dimension
- line that was created anywhere on the drawing.
-
- HOW DIMENSIONS - show the dimensions you have created. This is the
- default.
-
- HIDE DIMENSIONS - Prevents the display of dimensions and text.
-
- CROSS HAIRS ON - cross hairs serve the same option as a T square does
- on a drafting board. It assists in aligning items while drawing. This
- option causes the flashing cross hair (alignment lines) to move with
- the mouse pointer when using most of the options on the Landscape,
- Foundation, Frame, Draw, Estimate and Alter menus. The default setting
- in ON..CROSS HAIRS OFF - prevents display of the cross hairs.
-
- SHOW CURRENT LEVEL, CURRENT AND BELOW and SHOW ALL LEVELS - These three
- options control how much of the drawing is shown relative to the Z
- ?=axis (up and down). Put another way, they control whether items
- above and below the current level are displayed. They also control
- whether items above or below the current level are deleted, copied or
- moved when using the MOVE, DELETE or COPY options.
-
- SHOW CURRENT LEVEL - shows only items on the current level. This is
- the default. Example: If you are on the first floor (usually level
- 0), you wouldn't see the basement walls or anything on the second
- floor.
-
- CURRENT AND BELOW - displays items on the current level and below.
- Example: If you were on the first floor, you would see all items drawn
- on the first floor and everything in the basement as well. Like SHOW
- ALL LEVELS, this option is helpful in aligning items from one level to
- the next.
-
- SHOW ALL LEVELS - causes all levels of your drawing (basement, first
- floor, second floor, roof etc) to be displayed on the screen at once.
- This is helpful when trying to align walls from one floor to the next.
-
- SHOW PLUMBING ONLY, SHOW ELECTRIC ONLY, SHOW ALL, HIDA?E PLUMBING, SHOW
- PLUMBING, HIDE ELECTRIC and SHOW ELECTRIC - These seven options control
- the display of plumbing - related and electric - related items. These
- options are subject to the rules set up by the SHOW LEVEL options
- described previously.
-
- SHOW PLUMBING ONLY and SHOW ELECTRIC ONLY cause only those items to be
- displayed. This is useful in the design of plumbing and wiring. SHOW
- ALL turns both of these options off. That is to say it causes all
- items in your drawing to be displayed.
-
- HIDE PLUMBING - prevents plumbing related items from being shown. All
- other items are shown.
-
- SHOW PLUMBING - turns off the HIDE PLUMBING option. Plumbing it
- ems are shown.
-
- HIDE ELECTRIC - prevents electric-related items from being shown. All
- other items are shown.
-
- SHOW ELECTRIC - turns off the HIDE ELECTRIC option. Electric items are
- shown.
-
- LANDSCAPE MENU OPTIONS

-
- SECTION 4: HOW IT WORKS IN DETAIL
- This section contains detailed instructions on how to use each
- function. The functions in this section appear in the order in which
- they appear on the HomeBuilders Cad menu strip.
-
- When you first start the program, you see a white screen with rulers
- drawn across the top and down the left side. This is called the
- Drafting Window and is your primary view of the drawings you create.
- You will also notice the words 45 x 20ft in the upper left hand corner.
- This is the current scale. That means that the current drafting window
- is looking at an area 45 feet across and 30 feet down. The drawing
- area is much larger than this but the 45 x 30 foot area is all you can
- see at the moment.
-
- Imagine that you are in a high flying airplane looking straight down at
- the ground using a camera with a Zoom lens. What you would see looking
- through the lens is a small portion of the ground. This is what the
- drafting window does. It allows you to look at a small portion of the
- ground called your drawing area.
-
- Just as with the camera in the airplane, you can look North, South,
- East and West of your current view. This is done by using the PU (pan
- up). PD (pan down), PR (pan right) and PL (pan left) gadgets on the
- View window which is located over the Drafting window on the right.
- You will also notice on the View window there are the gadgets Up a
- Level and DN a Level. These are used for moving up and down in your
- drawing (like from the first floor to the second floor).
-
- There is also a BACK, FRONT, LEFT and RIGHT gadget on the View window.
- These are used to see the respective views (sometimes called
- elevations) of your drawings. These views can be seen by pulling up
- the PULL ME TO SEE screen.
-
- To do this, move the mouse pointer down to the white strip at the
- bottom of the screen. While keeping the left mouse button depressed,
- move the mouse pointer up. This will pull up the PULL ME UP TO SEE
- screen and reveal the other views. This screen is also used for
- displaying the cost data generated by the Estimate menu options.
-
- All of the gadgets on the View window can be used by moving the mouse
- pointer over the desired gadget and pressing the left mouse button. To
- use any of the menu functions after using a gadget on the View window,
- reactivate the Drafting window by moving the mouse pointer over any
- part of the Drafting window (but not on the View window) and press the
- left mouse button.
-
- If you want to view an area greater than 45 x 30 feet, use the Scale
- option of the View/Scale menu. This option allows you to view an area
- as large as 900 x 600 feet and as small as 9" x 6". Items can be drawn
- to 1/60" accuracy.
-
- You will find the number 0 on the lower left hand corner of the
- Drafting window. This is the item counter. It will increase as you
- add to your drawing. Its limit is 450 items, which should be enough
- for the average sized house. Contractors and other people using
- HomeBuilders Cad for creating complex structures (more than 450 items)
- should get the "Contractors Upgrade" version of HomeBuilders Cad and a
- minimum of 2 megabytes of memory. The "Contractors Upgrade" is FREE
- and can be obtained by writing EaseWare at 25 Belair Road, Wellesley,
- MA. 02181. Be sure to give your name, address and HomeBuilders Cad
- serial number.
-
- The remainder of this section decribes each menu function in detail.
